The Basics

How Find & Replace Works

A find and replace tool, also called a text replacer, scans your text for a word or pattern and swaps every match for whatever you choose. Instead of scrolling through a long document and editing the same thing over and over, you set it once and every instance changes together. Leave the replace field empty and it simply deletes each match, which is a fast way to strip out a repeated phrase or an unwanted tag.

Three options keep the replacement precise. Case sensitive makes ID and id count as different text, which matters for code and constants. Whole word stops a search for cat from touching catalog or concatenate, so you only change complete words. Regex turns the find field into a pattern, so a token for digits or whitespace can match things a plain search cannot, and a bracketed group can be reused in the replacement with a dollar sign and a number to reshape the text rather than just swap it.

Handy Regex Patterns

Switch on regex, then reach for these when a plain search is not enough.

Match by type

A backslash d matches any digit, a backslash w matches word characters and a backslash s matches spaces and tabs. Add a plus to match one or more in a row.

Capture and reuse

Wrap part of the pattern in brackets to capture it, then put a dollar sign and a number in the replacement to drop it back in. Great for reordering names or dates.

Anchors and sets

A caret matches the start of a line and a dollar sign the end, while square brackets match any one character inside them, like a set of separators to standardize.

Check the count first

The match number tells you how many changes will happen. If it is far higher than you expected, your search is too broad, so tighten it before you copy.

Use whole word for short terms

Short words like the, id or cat hide inside bigger words. Turn on whole word so you change only the standalone term and never break a longer one.

Chain replacements

Use output as input to run a second pass on the result. This lets you make several clean edits in a row without pasting back and forth.
