What llms.txt Is

An llms.txt file is a short markdown file, proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI, that sits at the root of your site and hands AI tools a clean, curated guide to your best content. As assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity increasingly answer questions about businesses directly, this file is a low-effort way to shape what they understand about you, without them having to parse a page full of navigation, ads and scripts.

The whole spec is deliberately tiny. The file starts with an H1 that names your site, then a blockquote with a one-line summary, then optional lines of extra context. After that come H2 sections, each holding a simple markdown list of links in the form of a title, a URL and a short description. There is also an Optional section for secondary links an assistant can skip when it is short on context. There is no XML, no schema and no validation step, so a basic markdown parser can read it and walk the structure.

It is worth being clear-eyed about it. No major AI engine has confirmed that llms.txt affects ranking, and Google says no special AI file is needed for AI Overviews, so this is not a magic switch. What it is is cheap, tiny and already read by a growing set of AI tools, which makes it a sensible thing to ship.
