Google Business Profile Audit

Enter your business details below. The more information you provide, the more accurate your audit will be.

This is a self-audit. You tell it what your listing has and it scores you against best practice. It does not read your live profile, because Google gives no public API for that. The value is in the checklist and the ordering rather than in automation. That is where most audits fail anyway. People know the gaps, they just fix the wrong ones first.

What is a Google Business Profile audit?

A Google Business Profile audit is a check of your listing against the things that decide whether you appear in the local map pack. That is the block of three businesses Google shows on the map, also called the local pack or the local 3-pack. It covers your category, your reviews, your photos, your hours and your NAP, which means name, address and phone. Google renamed the product from Google My Business in 2021, so the two names mean the same thing and most people still search the old one.

Three things carry most of the weight. Your primary category decides which searches you are even eligible for, and getting it wrong caps everything else. Reviews drive both ranking and the click. Proximity to the searcher matters enormously and you cannot change it, which is why a perfect profile still loses to a closer competitor.

The fastest way to lose everything is the shortcut, stuffing keywords into your business name. It works until someone reports you, then the listing is suspended.

What actually moves you in the map pack?

Reviews, count and ratingHighYes, slowlyAsk every satisfied customer. Reply to all of them, including the bad ones
NAP consistencyMediumYesMake your name, address and phone identical everywhere online. Conflicts confuse Google
Photos and postsMediumYesReal photos, added regularly. They lift clicks more reliably than ranking
Keywords in business nameWorks, then destroys youYes, do notIt ranks until a competitor reports you, then the listing is suspended. Use your real name

The proximity row is the one worth accepting early. Local rank changes depending on where the searcher is standing, so a business three streets away can outrank you for a query you are objectively better at. That is not a bug you can fix. It is the system working as designed, and it is why chasing a single rank number for a local business is a waste of time. Google's own guidelines on local ranking name relevance, distance and prominence as the three factors.

Three parts of the profile reward attention beyond the basics. Replying to reviews is part of the engagement Google weighs, so answer positive ones briefly and by name, and negative ones calmly with an offline route to fix it, never the same copied line twice. The Q&A section is public, and anyone can answer, so seed it with the real questions customers ask and answer them yourself, because those answers now also feed AI summaries of your business. Service area businesses, the ones who travel to the customer rather than run a storefront, must hide the street address and list up to 20 areas they actually serve. The address stays on the back end for Google's verification, but showing a home or virtual address on a service area profile risks a suspension.

Dominate Local Search with Your GBP

Reviews Are #1 Local Signal

Google uses review quantity, recency and rating as primary local ranking signals. Aim for 50+ reviews with an average of 4.5+. The most important action, respond to every review, positive and negative, within 24 hours.

📸

Photos Drive 35% More Clicks

Businesses with 100+ photos get dramatically more views and direction requests. Add photos weekly, interior, exterior, team, products and "at work" shots. Use real photos, never stock images. Add your city name to image file names before uploading.

📝

Post Weekly Without Fail

GBP posts expire after 7 days and fresh content signals an active, trustworthy business. Post at least once a week, offers, updates, events. Include your primary keyword and a call to action. Consistent posting correlates strongly with Map Pack rankings.

A Free Local SEO Audit Tool Built From Real Campaigns

This free Google Business Profile audit tool, or GBP auditor if you prefer, scores your listing against a local SEO checklist and hands you a report of what to fix, in the order worth fixing it. Answer a few questions about your profile, formerly called Google My Business. It then tells you where the gaps are and which ones actually affect the map pack. It runs online with no account and nothing to install.

After 500+ projects the pattern in local SEO is remarkably consistent, and it is not what people expect. Almost nobody is failing because of something exotic. They are failing because the primary category is wrong, or because they have eleven reviews while the business three doors down has ninety. Category is a thirty second fix that people spend years not making. Reviews are slow and unglamorous, and they decide everything. Meanwhile the thing everyone wants to talk about, posts and photos, moves clicks but rarely rank.

The other half of local is off your profile entirely. Google cross-checks your name, address and phone against every directory that lists you. Conflicts confuse it. Check yours with the free local citation checker, add proper markup to your site with the free local schema generator, and browse the rest of the free SEO tools.

The order of the fixes is not random, and the closest thing local SEO has to a scoreboard is the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey. In its 2026 edition the primary category is the single most important thing you control, keywords in the business title come next, and business hours now count too because Google checks whether you are open at the moment someone searches. Pick the most specific category that fits, a pizzeria rather than a restaurant, because eight of the top ten Local Pack signals come straight from the profile. Keep name, address and phone identical everywhere, and make your LocalBusiness schema match the profile exactly. This matters more each year, when a local AI Overview appears it leans on Google Business Profile data first, and the businesses it names are the ones whose profile signals Google trusts most.

Where Does This Audit Come From?

Being straight with you about what this is. It is a self-audit, not a live scan. You tell it what your listing has and it scores your answers against the checklist. It cannot read your Google Business Profile directly, because Google offers no public API that lets a tool do that. Any free tool claiming otherwise is either guessing from your website or scraping in a way that will break. The checklist itself is built from what Google publishes about local ranking, meaning relevance, distance and prominence, plus patterns across 500+ projects. The scoring weights are my judgement about what moves the map pack in practice rather than a Google formula. Reasonable people would weight them slightly differently. What it is really good at is ordering, telling you that your category matters more than your posts, which is the mistake almost everyone makes.

Google Business Profile Audit FAQ

Common questions about this free tool, answered clearly.

What makes a strong Google Business Profile?

A complete profile with the right primary category, full contact details, hours, regular photos, posts and a steady flow of reviews with replies. Completeness and activity are what move you up in the map pack.

How important are reviews for local ranking?

Very. Review count, rating and how recently you got them all feed local ranking. Replying to reviews, good and bad, signals an active, trustworthy business.

How often should I post on my profile?

Post at least once a week. Fresh posts, photos and offers keep your profile active, which Google rewards. They also give customers a reason to choose you.

Is this the same as a Google My Business audit?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021, so a Google My Business audit and a Google Business Profile audit are the same thing. Plenty of people still search the old name, and plenty of agencies still use it. Nothing about the audit changes, only the branding did. If you came here looking for a GMB audit tool, you are in the right place.

Can I get the audit as a checklist or template I can keep?

The report you get at the end is the checklist, ordered by what matters rather than alphabetically. You can print or save it. That ordering is the part worth keeping. Most Google Business Profile audit templates you find online list forty items as though they weigh the same, so people work down the list and spend a week on photos while their primary category is still wrong. Fix in the order the report gives you.

Why does my competitor outrank me with a worse profile?

Usually proximity. Google weighs how close a business is to the person searching, and that is not something you can optimise. A worse profile that is physically nearer will beat you for searches in its own area, and you will beat it in yours. This is why local rank changes street by street and why chasing a single position number is a waste of energy. Look at whether you show up across the area you actually serve instead.

Why Hire Me for Your Local SEO

This free tool scores your profile. If you would rather have someone actually get you into the map pack, here are a few honest reasons businesses hire me as their SEO and digital marketing consultant in India.

Category First, Everything Else Second

Most local businesses are in the wrong primary category and have never questioned it. It caps every search you can appear for, and it takes thirty seconds to change.

Hands-On, Not Just Oversight

I started as a technical SEO trainee, not in a management seat, and I still do the local work myself. You get direct expertise, not a checklist emailed to you.

I Built This Tool Myself

The audit you just ran, I designed it, along with 22 other free SEO tools on this site. It is a direct look at how I assess a local listing before you ever become a client.

Reviews, Systematically

Everyone knows reviews matter and almost nobody has a system for asking. I build the asking into how the business already works, which is the only version that survives contact with a busy week.

Direct Line to Me

Messages get a reply within 24 hours on business days, and WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach me for anything urgent. You are not waiting in a support queue.

Suspensions Avoided, Not Repaired

Keyword stuffed business names work until someone reports you and the listing vanishes. Getting reinstated is slow and uncertain. I would rather you never need to.
