Copy and paste any piece of content, a blog post, product description, landing page copy, email or social post. The checker handles any length from a single paragraph to a full article.
The tool calculates your Flesch Reading Ease score, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog Index and all supporting statistics in under a second.
Three score cards show your Reading Ease (0 to 100), Grade Level and estimated Reading Time. Colour-coded badges instantly show whether your content is Easy, Standard or Difficult to read.
The improvement panel gives specific, actionable advice, which sentences are too long, where passive voice is overused, whether your paragraphs are too dense and which words to simplify.
A readability score estimates how much effort your writing takes to read, based on sentence length and word length. A readability checker counts those and maps the result onto a scale. The commonest is Flesch Reading Ease, where higher is easier, and its sibling Flesch-Kincaid Grade, which reports a school year instead.
The formulas are old and mechanical, and that is worth understanding rather than resenting. They do not read your writing. They count syllables. A short sentence of jargon scores well while a long, clear, elegant sentence scores badly. So the score is a proxy for effort, not a judgement of quality.
Alongside the score, the checker reports the raw counts it works from, your word count, sentence count, paragraph count and average sentence length. These are the numbers to act on. A high grade level almost always traces back to one of them, usually sentences that run too long, so the counts tell you what to cut before you touch anything else.
It is also not a ranking factor. Google has said so plainly. What it changes is whether a reader gets to the end, which is what everything else depends on.

| Content type | Flesch target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Local business page | 60 to 70 | Your customer is on a phone and in a hurry, and did not come to admire your prose |
| Blog post or guide | 55 to 65 | Comfortable for a general reader without sounding like a children's book |
| Technical documentation | 30 to 50 | Precision beats simplicity. Your reader wants the exact term, not an analogy |
| Legal or medical | Often under 30 | Accuracy is not negotiable and the words are long. Do not fight this |
| Landing page | 65 to 75 | Every extra second of effort costs conversions |
| Anything Google shows in AI answers | 60 plus | Machines lift clear self-contained sentences. Long clauses get skipped |
The technical documentation row is the one people argue with, and they are wrong to. Forcing a database manual up to a Flesch score of 70 means replacing precise terms with vague ones, which makes it worse for the only people reading it. The score is a tool for spotting accidental difficulty, not a target to hit. If your audience is specialists, write for specialists and ignore the number. Google's own helpful content guidance asks whether the writing serves the reader, not whether it hits a grade level.
Most successful online content reads at a 7th, 9th grade level, regardless of the audience's actual education. Even highly educated readers prefer clear, concise writing online. HubSpot, Backlinko and the world's top blogs consistently score between 60 to 70 on the Flesch Reading Ease scale.
Long sentences are the #1 cause of low readability scores. Aim for an average sentence length under 20 words. Vary your sentence rhythm, mix short punchy sentences (5 to 8 words) with medium ones (15 to 20 words). Never have three long sentences in a row.
Paragraphs on the web should be 2 to 4 sentences long, never more than 5. Each paragraph should contain exactly one main idea. Use subheadings every 300 words to break up the text and give readers visual "landing spots". White space dramatically increases completion rates.
This free readability checker tool measures how easy your content is to read and gives you a clear score to act on. Paste your text or a URL and it runs an instant content readability analysis online, returning a Flesch Reading Ease score from 0 to 100, an estimated grade level and reading age, plus the exact sentences that are too long or too complex. There is no sign-up, no credit card and no word limit, so it is a truly free readability score checker you can run on every draft.
A number on its own does not improve anything. Over 17+ years writing and editing content across 500+ projects, I learned that readability is really about respect for the reader's time. So this tool does not just check the readability of your content, it shows you where it breaks, the run-on sentence, the paragraph that buries the point, the jargon a normal reader will stumble on, using proven formulas like Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog and SMOG so the reading level it reports is reliable, not a guess.
Readability matters more than ever. Clear writing lowers bounce rates and, in 2026, is what helps AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity understand and quote your page. For most web content, aim for a Flesch score of 60 to 70, around a grade 7 to 8 reading level, even when your audience is expert. Check every draft, simplify the sentences this tool flags and re-test until the level fits your readers. Then run the page through the free on-page SEO analyzer and find the terms to target with the free keyword research tool, or explore all the free SEO tools to round out your content workflow.
The scores trace back to Rudolf Flesch, whose reading-ease formula the US Navy later paired with a grade level, and the family has grown to include Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and ARI, each weighing sentence length and word difficulty a little differently. For the web the target is steady, roughly grade six to nine, or a Flesch score in the sixties and seventies, which is where most people read without effort. Worth remembering when a low grade feels like dumbing down, Hemingway wrote around fourth-grade level and Stephen King near sixth, so simple prose is a craft choice that widens your audience, not a weaker one. It is not a direct ranking factor, but easier pages hold readers longer and get shared more, and those are signals Google watches.

Launch ToolNo. Google has said directly that it does not use readability scores as a ranking signal, and there is no Flesch threshold to hit. What readability affects is whether people finish reading, whether they trust you and whether they act. Those things drive the signals Google does measure. So write clearly because it works, not because a formula told you to.
For most web copy, 60 to 70. That reads comfortably for a general adult reader without feeling patronising. But context decides. A landing page benefits from 70 plus because every second of effort costs conversions, while technical documentation may sit at 40 and be correct to. If your audience is specialists and your words are necessarily long, a low score is the price of precision rather than a problem.
Because the formula cannot read. It counts syllables and sentence length, nothing else. A long, elegant, perfectly clear sentence scores worse than a short one made of jargon. That is a limitation of forty year old maths, not a judgement of your writing. Use the score to catch accidental difficulty, such as a paragraph of sixty word sentences. Ignore it when it disagrees with your own ear.
Split your longest sentences. That single change fixes most scores, because sentence length dominates the formula. After that, cut the passive voice where it adds nothing, replace a long word with a short one when the meaning survives, then break walls of text into paragraphs. Read it aloud. If you run out of breath the sentence is too long, and no tool will tell you that as reliably as your own lungs.
More than it does for ranking, oddly. AI answers lift self-contained passages, and a clear short sentence is far easier to quote than a long one full of subordinate clauses. If you want to be cited by ChatGPT or an AI Overview, the same habits that lift readability also make your writing liftable. Answer first, one idea per sentence, no build-up.
The same maths, reported two ways. Reading Ease gives you 0 to 100 where higher is easier. Flesch-Kincaid Grade converts that into a US school year, so 8 means an average 13 year old could follow it. Most web writing should land around grade 8 or 9. That is not an insult to your readers, it is an acknowledgement that they are busy and reading on a phone.
This free tool scores your readability. If you would rather have your content written or rewritten to read clearly and rank, here are a few honest reasons businesses hire me as their SEO and content consultant in India.
Readable and optimised are not opposites. I write content that scores well for readability and targets the right keywords, so it is easy for people to read and easy for Google and AI to understand.
I started as a technical SEO trainee, not in a management seat, and I still write and edit the content myself. You get direct expertise, not a brief handed off to a junior writer.
The readability checker you just used, I built it, along with 22 other free SEO tools on this site. It is a direct look at how I think about clear content before you ever become a client.
AI drafts read stiff and generic. I edit content so it reads naturally at the right level, the kind of clear, human writing that keeps readers engaged and gets quoted in AI answers.
Messages get a reply within 24 hours on business days, and WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach me for anything urgent. You are not waiting in a support queue.
Readable content is one piece. Keyword research, on-page SEO and technical health all sit with one person who understands how they connect, so clear writing also becomes ranking writing.
